A simple guide to: Styling Cushions & how to get it right
how to style cushions
When it comes to styling cushions, and creating cushion combinations - there’s no strict formula per se, but if you follow a few simple guidelines it can make all the difference to the overall look.
Whether you’re working with a settee or a bed, the aim is the same: considered, intentional and calmly curated.
How many cushions?
Whilst there are no exact rules, this is what we recommend…
For your settee, we’d suggest 2 to 5 cushions, depending on its size.
The longer the settee, the more cushions you can get away with.
Quality over quanity really applies here… you shouldn’t have to remove them just to sit down.
For your bed, 1 to 3 cushions create a simple, chic look.
HINT: The key is to choose them well.
Size matters: Consider the scale of your bed.
Texture: Mix plain fabrics with textured weaves to add interest.
Pattern: Completely personal. Pattern doesn’t have to feel scary, trust us! A simple stripe or textured weave counts.
As a general guide, we recommend two larger cushions paired with one or two smaller ones.
Quick overall cushion sizing guide
The most common cushion sizes are 20”, 18”, and 16” and how you layer them is what matters.
Start with the largest at the back (20” or 18”)
Layer a small size in front (18” or 16”)
Add an extra finish with a “feature piece” such as a 12” x 20” rectangular cushion to break up the symmetry and add a more relaxed and comfortable feel.
Maths time - the formulas…
If you’re not sure where to start, think of cushions in layers… quite like you would clothing.
Solid or plain + large scale pattern + smaller scale pattern
Creating balance, without too much symmetry.
Textured plain + pattern (large or small scale) + shaped cushion
The texture adds depth without being overwhelming, while a different shape (like a rectangular cushion or bolster) keeps things feeling more relaxed and less uniform.
Just adapt the above to suit your needs.
Scatter cushion styling…
Small plain setee? Maybe opt for 1 large scale print + 1 small scale print - add interest without overdoing the space. Large 4+ seater? You could mix it up and combine the two examples… 2 textured, 1 or 2 patterned (small or large scale) + shaped cushion in a coordinating pattern.
TIP: Start with one fabric you really love, then build around it - pulling out colours, tones or patterns you like.
IMPORTANT: Try not to overthink it.
Don’t forget the inner matters
Choosing the right cushion inner is a must. The inner can affect how your cushions look and how they feel day to day.
TIP: Size your cushion inners slightly larger than the covers - trust us! This technique gives that fuller, more luxurious finish. For example in a 20” cushion cover you would want a 22” inner. We have created guide about how to find your perfect cushion inner.
Cushions should feel considered, but never overthought.

Important overall takeaway: Is to invest in fewer, higher quality pieces!
